Chapter Twenty-Six

“She should be here any minute,” Braxton looked at his watch and sighed. I sent him a polite smile, hoping it would ease some of his annoyance.

He arranged a nice dinner because over the past weeks, he’s been spending a lot of time at work. When I told him that Ari and I barely hung out, he decided to have a special dinner together to catch up. It was rare if I saw Ari on campus; if I did, she was with Grace and didn’t stay around me for too long. I tried to explain to him that their relationship was fresh, so maybe she wanted to spend all her time with Grace. I didn’t take it personal, but I could understand why that would make him upset.

“Um, I wanted to talk to you about something. It’s been on my mind since that night in your office,” I said. Braxton peeled his eyes away from his watch and furrowed his eyebrows.

“What is it?”

“Well, you said something that caught me off guard. I’m not sure if it was the heat of the moment or if you meant it, but you said you loved me. Did you mean it?” The frown on my face wasn’t because I was sad that he said it; I was frowning at what his answer might be. It would crush me if Braxton told me that he didn’t mean it. What should I expect, though? Braxton said in the beginning that he wasn’t looking for anything serious.

He chuckled before reaching over to place his hand over mine. Braxton stared at me then said,” Vera, of course, I–” Again, we were interrupted by Ari walking in. Braxton pulled his hand away from mine and sat back in his seat. He cleared his throat, grabbing his glass of lemon water to pretend we weren’t in here just confessing our feelings.

“Sorry, I’m late. I got caught up with Grace,” Ari pulled off her white sweater, then sat at the table.

“That’s alright,” I smiled.

“No, it’s not alright,” Braxton shook his head, chuckling lightly as he took a sip of his water.

“Dad, I’m only fifteen minutes late. Calm down,” Ari laughed.

“Excuse me? Don’t tell me to calm down,” his smile faded into a straight line. I opened my mouth, looking between the two who were having a staring contest. Neither of them wanted to back down as they glared at each other.

“Does anyone want mashed potatoes?” I tried to break their awkward silence. Thankfully, it worked because Ari looked at me and nodded. I smiled, then passed the bowl of Braxton’s famous mashed potatoes. I still couldn’t get over how velvety smooth and buttery those things were. If Braxton and I ever parted ways, I’d missed his cooking.

“Can you pass me the broccoli?” He looked down at his steak as he sliced into the medium rare beef.

“Yes, Daddy,” I said as I reached for the bowl. I froze with my eyes widening as Ari started laughing. Braxton had the same horrified expression as me when it slipped from my mouth.
